On November 16, 1933, the USSR and the USA establish diplomatic relations.

The first Soviet ambassador to the USA was Alexander Troyansky.

Official contacts between the Russian Empire and the United States of America began in 1776. Russia, although formally neutral during the American Revolution (1765 – 1783), supported the United States.

The Russian Embassy in America was founded in 1807, but after the Revolution in 1917, Washington long refused to recognize the new power, and the US officially recognized the Soviet Union only 16 years later.

During the Second World War, the USSR and the USA were allies, but the Cold War, which lasted until the collapse of the Soviet Union, caused nearly half a century of enmity between the USSR and the USA, as well as between their allies.

In 1991, the USA recognized the new Russian Federation after the collapse of the USSR.
