The champion in the National Basketball Association of the USA and Canada, the Boston Celtics, will change ownership in a deal worth $6.1 billion, ESPN reported, quoted by BTA.
This will be the most expensive deal in the history of sports in North America. So far, the record holder in this regard is the American football club Washington Commanders, which was purchased in 2023 for $6.05 billion.
The new owner of the "Celtics" will be William (Bill) Chisholm, who is a manager at the investment fund Symphony Technology Group. Chisholm and a group of smaller investors will buy the Celtics shares from the Grusbeck family, which has owned the most successful team in the NBA since 2002. The "Greens" have a total of 18 titles, with the last two - in 2008 and in 2024 - being won during Grosbeek's tenure.
In June of last year, the Celtics' owners announced plans to sell their shares in the team in 2024 or 2025. Entrepreneur Vic Grosbeek, who is currently the owner of the club, has expressed his desire to remain in management until 2028.
In 2002, Vic Grosbeek and Steve Palyuka acquired shares in the Celtics for the sum of $ 360 million.
