Germany will not lift restrictions on attacks on Russian territory with German weapons, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said. According to him, Berlin does not want to take steps that could lead to escalation.
"We support Ukraine as much as necessary and all our decisions are weighted to prevent a war between Russia and NATO," Scholz said, as quoted by DieWelt and DeutscheWelle.
According to the chancellor, Germany has made it clear which types of weapons it can transfer to Ukraine and which it cannot.
The German chancellor has refused to transfer long-range TAURUS systems to Ukraine for many months, despite Kiev's demands.
"It is impossible to deliver very long-range weapons and not think about how to control them. And control is only possible with the participation of German soldiers, which is absolutely unacceptable," he said in March.
Scholz noted that Ukraine was authorized to use German-supplied weapons only to strike Russian areas bordering Kharkiv Oblast to prevent Russian cross-border shelling of Kharkiv.
Olaf Scholz also reiterated that Germany will not send its military to Ukraine.
He stressed the need to maintain processes that will lead to peace.
