„The United States, in anticipation of the second round of presidential elections on November 3, remains concerned that Russia will again try to prevent Moldovans from exercising their sovereign right to elect their leaders,” said the document. Blinken assured that “the United States, together with allies and partners, supports the Moldovan people in their quest for security, prosperity and a democratic future”.
According to the US Secretary of State, the government of Moldova and the Central Election Commission ensured "good organization and competitiveness of the elections.“
On October 14, Russian President Dmitry Peskov's press secretary categorically rejected accusations that Moscow interfered in the electoral process in Moldova.
On October 20, presidential elections were held in Moldova. Based on the results of processing 100% of the protocols, the current President Maya Sandu received 42.45% of the votes in the presidential elections, the former Prosecutor General Alexander Stoyanoglo - 25.99%. Since no candidate received more than 50% of the vote, a second round will be held on November 3.
At the same time, a referendum was held, as a result of which it was proposed to add the words “of irreversibility” in the constitution of Moldova. According to the CEC, 50.46% of those who voted in the referendum supported the amendments to the Moldovan constitution regarding the irreversibility of the course towards joining the EU, and 49.54% were against it. In Gagauzia, 94.84% of those who voted were against joining the EU, and among the residents of Transnistria - 62.56%. No polling stations were organized in the unrecognized republic itself.
