Mexico is working together with Washington to reach an agreement on US import tariffs before they take effect. This was stated to Reuters by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade of Mexico Luis Rosendo Gutierrez after meeting in Washington with the team of the US Trade Representative Jamison Greer, BTA reported.
"We are working together to reach agreements before the fatal dates", Gutierrez said, referring to the 25 percent tariffs on imports of Mexican and Canadian goods announced by Trump. In early February, the US Secretary of State signed an order imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, but postponed their implementation by a month - until March 4.
Yesterday, however, Trump said that the tariffs would take effect on April 2. This week, senior Mexican government officials are participating in a series of meetings with their American counterparts in Washington.
Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard is expected to meet with Jamison Greer on Thursday and with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Friday, a spokesman for the Mexican Economy Ministry said.
