Germany will continue to support Ukraine with its new government regardless of whether the US provides assistance, as this coincides with Germany's national interests, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on ADR television, quoted by Ukrinform.
"If Ukraine falls, if Putin wins this war by occupying Ukraine, this will pose a maximum threat to NATO, as well as to NATO neighboring countries such as Georgia and Moldova. "This is not just solidarity with Ukraine, it is about our security and peace in Europe," he said.
In response to a question about the possibility of providing long-range missiles to Kiev, as future Chancellor Friedrich Merz had previously suggested, Pistorius made it clear that such a decision would most likely not be made.
"We have already said everything about the Taurus: it will not end the war," Pistorius said. According to him, providing intelligence is more necessary.
Pistorius also said that in his opinion, Trump's demands for territorial concessions from Ukraine go too far and de facto constitute a capitulation.
"Ukraine could have achieved this on its own if it had capitulated a year ago," the politician explained.
As reported by Ukrinform, if the coalition agreement is approved by all three parties that worked on it (the CDU/CSU and the SPD), Germany could have a new government as early as May 6. Pistorius will likely remain in his post as defense minister.
