Ukraine has called on Russia to agree to "a complete and immediate ceasefire for a period of at least 30 days" after President Vladimir Putin announced a three-day ceasefire today - from May 8 to 11 - to mark the anniversary of the end of World War II, the agencies reported.
"If Russia really wants peace, it must immediately stop the fighting", insisted Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga in "Ex". "Why wait for May 8?", he asked, adding that Ukraine is ready to support a complete and lasting ceasefire. "And this is our standing proposal, for at least 30 days", Sibiga said.
Earlier today, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a three-day ceasefire in Ukraine next month for the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union and its allies in World War II, world agencies reported.
The Kremlin announced that the 72-hour ceasefire would be in effect from midnight on May 7/8 to midnight on May 10/11 and called on Ukraine to also observe it.
The Kremlin press service statement said that in the event of violations by the Ukrainian side, the Russian armed forces would give an “adequate and effective response“.
