Turkey has over 1,200 stations for monitoring seismic activity - the largest such network in Europe. This was announced by Orhan Tatar, director of the Seismic Activity and Risk Reduction Center at the Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD), quoted by TRT Haber, BTA reports.
According to him, each of the stations monitors earthquakes in the country in real time, and the collected information is sent to a specialized processing center. There are 25 engineers on duty 24/7, analyzing over 30,000 earthquakes per year.
„We continuously monitor seismic activity through our network of 1,200 stations. This makes us a leader in Europe in this indicator“, emphasized Tatar. He added that efforts to modernize the network continue both within the country and in neighboring regions.
According to AFAD data, the largest number of stations are located in the Marmara Sea region - over 300 in number - due to the increased seismic risk in this region.
