The US tariffs on imports from EU countries, which the administration of US President Donald Trump may introduce on April 2, could reach 20-25%, Politico reported, citing two EU diplomats.

According to them, “the size of the tariffs could be 20% or 25%“. Politico notes that the new tariffs on European imports will likely be imposed as a flat rate, calculated based on the trade barriers that EU countries have placed on US exports.

Earlier, Trump announced his intention to introduce retaliatory tariffs on imported goods from April 2. According to him, Brazil, India, Canada, China, Mexico and EU countries impose on the US, on average, much higher tariffs than the US charges them.

On February 10, Trump ordered a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminium imports, a decision that took effect on March 12. The next day, Trump said that Washington could impose a 200% tariff on alcoholic beverages, including wine, from the EU unless the bloc removes tariffs on American whiskey. The EU announced the restrictions in response to US tariffs on European aluminium and steel.

On March 26, Trump announced that the United States would impose a 25% import tariff on all cars made outside the country. The previously applied 2.5% tariff is also to remain in place, making the new tariff rate 27.5%.
