Polish lawmakers will vote on Friday on a bill that makes it easier for security services to use weapons against migrants on the border with Belarus, reports Reuters.
The bill has broad public support, but critics say it violates human rights. The change is backed by Donald Tusk's pro-EU government, which opposes the previous nationalist administration.
From 2021, Poland is fighting a hybrid war on the border organized by Belarus and Russia, according to Warsaw and the EU. The bill allows for the use of force, including firearms, in certain emergency situations. A survey shows that 85.7% of Poles support the use of weapons to repel migrants who use force.
Activists are concerned, however, that the law could limit control of incidents. The government rejects these arguments, saying the migrants are "gangs attacking Polish soldiers".
