Russia does not rule out that US President-elect Donald Trump wants to repeat the experience of his first term in the White House and hold a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. This was stated in an interview with TASS by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Andrei Rudenko.
„Nothing can be ruled out, especially in politics. Donald Trump, who met with the leader of the DPRK in 2018-2019, may want to repeat his experience,”, he noted, answering a question about the possibility of resumption of contacts with Pyongyang by the new US administration.
At the same time, Rudenko believes that the resumption of the negotiation process between the US and the DPRK “under the same conditions seems problematic“ against the backdrop of global geopolitical changes both on the Korean Peninsula and in the world as a whole .
„In addition, and this is perhaps the most important, the prospects for the negotiation process depend not only and not so much on the desire of the US, but on the principled position of the DPRK on this issue,”, he noted.
Commenting on the possibility of returning to the form of six-party negotiations (Russia, the United States, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the DPRK) to resolve the nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation emphasized that the first step for this should be stabilization of the situation in the region.
„If in the future the geopolitical conditions in the region change for the better and there is a discussion of security issues in Northeast Asia based on the new realities, the multilateral format may be in demand again”, suggested Rudenko.
