'Neofascists tried to attack our freedom': 44 years since Bologna massacre - 1

Terrorists 44 years ago wanted to destroy Italian values. This was stated by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the massacre at the train station in Bologna, reported SIR (Servizio Informazione Religiosa).

On August 2, 1980, in the morning hours, a horrific terrorist attack took place at the station in Bologna. 85 people were killed and another 200 injured. Authorities have blamed a neo-fascist group for the attack, but over the years there have been many theories about what happened, including conspiracy theories.

„The dead, the images of the devastated station in Bologna, the ferocious attack against Italians left an indelible mark on the identity of the Republic and on the conscience of the Italian people on August 2, 1980,”, said the Italian president.

„Memory is not only an obligation, but is a conscious expression of this civil society, expressed in the constitutional values that terrorist violence wanted to attack and destroy,” Mattarella also said.

The neo-fascist subversive strategy tried to attack the freedom won by the Italians, the president said. “An irreparable wound, a permanent warning that must be passed on to younger generations along with the values of democratic response and unity of our community, as well as safeguarding the common good,” Mattarella said.
