Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described today as “brave&rdquo ; the agreement between Italy and Albania on migrants, reported France Press. In a speech to Italian senators, Meloni stated that the treaty “is a new, bold and unprecedented path that perfectly reflects the European spirit and is according to the rules, so that its example will be followed by other countries outside the EU”, quoted by BTA.< /strong>
According to the treaty, two centers were opened in Albania to host migrants captured by the Italian authorities in the Mediterranean. They will remain in the centers until their applications for asylum on Italian territory are processed in Italy.
Yesterday, the first migrants were sent to centers in Albania run by Italy – from Egypt and Bangladesh. The opening of the centers is part of the Italian government's efforts to combat illegal migration.
While the first migrants were transferred to Albania, 960 migrants arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa in just one day, ANSA reported.
