The commander of "Islamic State" in Iraq was killed, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced, reports Reuters, quoted by BTA.
The operation was carried out in Hamrin mountain, in the north-eastern part of the country.
After the defeat of the "Islamic State" as a force capable of holding territory, remnants of the group moved to surprise attacks against government forces in various areas of Iraq.
Iraq has put hundreds of suspected jihadists on trial and carried out several mass executions since defeating ISIS fighters in a US-backed 2014-2017 military campaign.
