Extensive Restoration of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul: Preserving Cultural Heritage - 1

The iconic “Hagia Sophia” in Istanbul is about to undergo a large-scale restoration aimed at preserving its structural integrity, reports the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, reports Focus.

The restoration work even includes dismantling the dome. The reason for these measures is the damage to the lead coating and the wear of the cement materials, explains Ahmet Gulek, a member of the scientific committee responsible for the project.

The restoration team intends to use Ottoman-era techniques and materials, although some critics question their applicability given the monument's Byzantine origins.

The process will begin in the spring, with a temporary roof installed to allow for all-season operation. The project covers the repair of the dome and other key structural elements. Despite the restoration activities, the authorities strive to preserve “Hagia Sophia“ accessible to both tourists and pilgrims.

Built in 537. by the Byzantine emperor Justinian I, “Saint Sophia” it was originally a Christian cathedral and a symbol of Byzantine architecture. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453 it was turned into a mosque by the Ottoman conquerors. In 1935 has been declared a museum, and recently its status as a mosque has been restored and it is once again open to visitors.
