A Chinese court has sentenced a man to death for killing 35 people last month when he drove his car into a group of pedestrians outside a sports center, an attack that has sparked nationwide concern over mass killings, the Associated Press reported, BTA reported.
A court in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai in Guangdong province sentenced Fan Weiqiu on Monday, saying the nature of the crime was extremely heinous, the approach was particularly cruel and the consequences were particularly severe.
The court found that Fan, 62, vented his anger on innocent people because he was unhappy with a divorce settlement agreement.
In the days after the attack, Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered local authorities to take necessary measures to prevent similar "extreme cases" in the future, the AP notes.
