Martin will be tasked with giving new direction to the hard-hit Democratic Party, which in November not only lost control of the White House but also failed to win either house of Congress.
Since then, the wandering party has been trying to resist the flood of decrees by Republican Trump, many of which undo the policies of former President Joe Biden.
A longtime party strategist in Minnesota, Martin took action just hours after his election, criticizing Trump's plans to impose significant tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China, saying it would inevitably raise prices for inflation-weary Americans after he campaigned on promises to cut their costs.
"Trump won't make corporate billionaires pay for these tariffs - working families and small businesses will. "He is using American workers as pawns in his political games," Martin said in a statement after Trump announced the tariffs. Martin called for rebuilding and expanding the party's national infrastructure so it can win elections across the country. Martin defeated Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Ben Wickler in the first round of the party leadership race. "Today's election marks a new chapter in the leadership of the Democratic National Committee, and Donald Trump and his billionaire allies are on notice: We will hold them accountable for robbing working families and we will defeat them at the ballot box," the new chairman said.
