Egypt announced today that it will organize a summit of Arab states on February 27 to discuss the latest serious developments related to the Palestinian issue, after US President Donald Trump announced a plan to place Gaza under US control, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA.
This extraordinary Arab summit will take place at a time when Egypt has gathered regional support against the US president's plan to relocate Gaza residents to Egypt and Jordan and place the Palestinian territory under US control in order to restore it.
The summit was convened by Egypt at the request of the Palestinians after consultations at the highest level with Arab countries over the past few days to discuss the latest serious developments related to the Palestinian cause, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
These contacts were established in particular with Bahrain, which currently holds the presidency of the Arab League, added the ministry.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelati held talks on Friday with his counterparts from Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to adopt a unified position rejecting the forced displacement of Palestinians.
Donald Trump's proposal was met with a wave of indignation around the world, especially from Arab countries that insist on the need for a two-state solution - Israel and Palestine - to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Egypt's top diplomat Badr Abdelati left for Washington today, where he will meet with senior representatives of the Trump administration and members of Congress, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said.
The purpose of the visit is to "strengthen bilateral relations and the strategic partnership between Egypt and the United States", as well as to hold "consultations regarding the situation in the region“, the Ministry's statement said.
