German Chancellor Olaf Scholz believes that the "endless arms buildup" must be prevented. Speaking at an event in Cottbus, he also noted that a return to arms control should not be neglected despite the events in Ukraine.
"We must prevent an endless arms buildup," Scholz said, quoted by the DPA agency.
"We would like nothing more than to talk about arms control in Europe again," the Chancellor added. "That would bring more security and one day we should achieve it again," he said.
However, from the German chancellor's perspective, the issue of arms control is not yet on the agenda, as Ukraine, he said, should continue to receive support. But Scholz warned that if everyone spends more and more on defense, "there will be a colossal accumulation of weapons."
He admitted that he probably should have dissolved his cabinet earlier.
"Maybe I should have dissolved the government earlier," the chancellor was quoted as saying by the Tagesspiegel newspaper.
