German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that tough measures will be taken after a car crashed into a Verdi union march in Munich this morning, injuring at least 28 people, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
Scholz described the incident as "horrifying" and expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families.
Munich authorities identified the driver as a 24-year-old Afghan, and Bavarian Premier Markus Söder said it was likely an attack. "If it is an attack, we must take all legal measures against the possible perpetrator," Scholz told reporters in the Bavarian city of Fürth.
"This perpetrator cannot count on leniency. He must be punished and leave the country," the German chancellor added. Scholz stressed that anyone who commits a crime in Germany will be severely punished and sent to prison, and will also not be able to stay in the country.
"This also applies to citizens of countries where deportation is difficult, such as Afghanistan," the chancellor concluded.
