A Spaniard was stabbed last night near the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA, citing police in the German capital.

The victim - a 30-year-old tourist - was stabbed several times and is in serious condition.

The attack took place at around 6 p.m. (7 p.m. Bulgarian time) - two days before early parliamentary elections in Germany on Sunday. The alleged attacker fled, but was later detained.

The motives of the perpetrator of the attack remain unknown. The man, who had blood on his hands when he was detained, did not speak to police. He was also not carrying any documents.

The atmosphere before the elections in Germany is tense after several deadly attacks that have taken place in the country in recent weeks, AFP notes. The far-right party "Alternative for Germany" is in second place in opinion polls.

The Holocaust Memorial is located in the center of Berlin, near the Brandenburg Gate and the US embassy, DPA indicates. It was opened in 2005 in memory of the millions of Jews killed during the Third Reich. It is located on an area of 19,000 sq. m. and consists of 2,711 concrete blocks (stele) of varying heights.
