An unknown disease in northwestern Congo has killed more than 50 people, doctors on the spot and the World Health Organization (WHO) reported, Focus reports.
The interval between the appearance of symptoms and death in most cases is only 48 hours, which is a serious concern, said Serge Ngalebato, director of Bikoro Hospital – a regional disease surveillance center, reports the Associated Press.
The epidemic began on January 21, with 419 cases registered so far, including 53 deaths.
A similar incident was also reported in December 2024, when dozens of people died from an unknown disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo. At the time, Deputy Governor Remy Saki reported that the disease had killed between 67 and 143 people in the Panzi health zone, located in the Quango province in the southwest of the country.
