Donald Trump: This is not true information, the US army will not leave Greece - 1

US President Donald Trump denied information published in several media outlets last night, according to which the US army will stop using the facilities in the northern Greek city of Alexandroupolis due to the imminent end of the war in Ukraine, reports the Greek newspaper “Kathimerini“, quoted by BTA.

At a press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron yesterday, Trump was asked by a journalist whether the US plans to close the "military base" in Alexandroupolis, as a Greek newspaper wrote. The US President turned to his aides in the room for clarification. After it was confirmed that the publication was inaccurate, Trump stressed that “This is not true information“, writes “Kathimerini“.

Yesterday, the Greek newspaper “Dimokratia“ wrote that the US plans to close its “military base“ in Alexandroupolis because it may be deemed unnecessary due to the looming end of the war in Ukraine. The publication was quoted in several other media.

Official representatives of the US administration have clarified that the US does not have a military base in Alexandroupolis, “Kathimerini“ and the Anadolu Agency reported today.

“This is a Greek facility to which the US has access under a defense cooperation agreement“, a US military representative told the Anadolu Agency. Alexandroupolis "simply serves as a transportation hub for US military equipment arriving and leaving Europe," the US official said, adding that "it is not a US base."

A State Department official told Breitbart that the US does not have a military base in Alexandroupolis that it is "going to close," but rather uses Greek facilities at the port as a transportation hub for moving military personnel to Europe, the Kathimerini newspaper reported.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Alexandroupolis has become a strategic port for the US and NATO, used as a critical supply route for the military deployed in Eastern Europe. These functions of the port are within the framework of a five-year Greek-American defense agreement signed in May 2022, recalls “Kathimerini“.
