The leaders of the 27 European Union countries, meeting today in Brussels, gave the green light to the European Commission's plan to boost defence, an EU spokeswoman said, quoted by Agence France-Presse, BTA reports.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed this week a plan to rearm Europe, which aims to mobilise 800 billion euros to boost the continent's defence capabilities.
The European Council, which consists of the heads of state and government of the 27 EU countries, "underlines the need to increase defence spending", it said in a joint statement declaration by EU countries.
The declaration reiterates the main outlines of the plan announced this week and calls on the European Commission to quickly start making concrete proposals under the plan.
