The United States has imposed sanctions on six senior Chinese and Hong Kong officials, including the chief of Hong Kong police, for human rights violations related to the authorities' crackdown on the special administrative region of China and a leading international financial center, news agencies reported, BTA reports.
“These measures reflect the commitment of the administration of President Donald Trump to hold accountable those responsible for the deprivation of rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents, as well as those who have carried out cross-border repression on US territory or against American citizens“, said Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
According to analysts, this move represents the first step by Washington in response to the strict measures of the Chinese authorities against democratic activists in Hong Kong.
