The head of the only US base in Greenland has been fired for criticizing the Trump administration's policy towards the vast Arctic island, the US armed forces announced, quoted by Agence France-Presse, BTA reported.
“Commanders adhere to the highest standards of conduct, including impartiality in the performance of their duties“, the US Space Force headquarters said in a statement.
“Actions that undermine the chain of command or torpedo President Trump's policies will not be tolerated at the Department of Defense“, wrote on the social network “Ex“ Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell.
According to military.com, base commander Susannah Myers distanced herself from criticism made by Vice President J.D. Vance during his visit to the base on March 28.
Vance criticized Denmark's actions in Greenland, accusing it of neglecting the security of its autonomous territory.
His visit came amid tensions after US President Trump repeatedly expressed his desire to annex Greenland, whose authorities have said the island is not for sale.
“I do not claim to understand current policy, but what I do know is that the concerns of the US government, discussed by Vice President Vance last Friday, do not reflect the views of staff at Pitufik Air Base,“ Myers wrote in an email quoted by military.com to the civilian and military personnel of the base.
