Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who survived an assassination attempt last year, has been experiencing health problems in the past few days. He announced this in a video message to his compatriots on Facebook.
"The wounds I received in the assassination attempt have been causing me problems for the past three days", he said. “I had to cancel part of my work program.“
The assassination attempt on Fico was carried out on May 15, 2024 in the town of Handlova in western Slovakia. He was shot by writer Juraj Sintula, who was detained and awaits sentencing. The prime minister underwent a series of operations and was able to return to his duties in July of that year. Fico announced on April 10 that he would have to undergo additional operations.
The prime minister also criticized the liberal opposition. "If they come to power, they will not pursue a policy in the national interest. They easily change their views on fundamental issues depending on the political situation," he said. And he gave the example of them currently "reconsidering" their previous negative attitude towards the participation of Slovak servicemen in possible peacekeeping units in Ukraine. Fico himself rejects any options for including Slovak soldiers in foreign military missions in Ukraine.
