The Spanish Interior Ministry declared a state of emergency on Monday after a power outage hit the entire Iberian Peninsula, Reuters reported.
The ministry added that the state of emergency would be imposed in all regions of the country that requested it. Madrid, Andalusia and Extremadura have so far asked the central authorities to take control of public order and other functions.
In addition, the Spanish Interior Ministry will deploy 30,000 police officers to strengthen security across the country.
Meanwhile, the Portuguese Airports and Air Navigation Service said it did not expect any flights to depart from Lisbon until 10 p.m. local time (midnight Bulgarian time) due to the power outage. The airports in Porto and Faro continue to operate in a limited mode.
