UN Special Envoy for Syria Gair Pedeshen expressed deep concern over the “unacceptable“ level of violence in the country and called for an immediate end to Israeli airstrikes. This was reported by Agence France-Presse, BTA reports.
Pedeshen expressed serious concerns about the possibility of further escalation of the already extremely unstable situation in Syria. He focused on recent incidents of violence around Damascus and Homs and called for an end to Israeli attacks.
According to him, Israel has intervened in an internal conflict with a religious overtone, in which dozens of people have died in the past two days. Israeli forces said they had carried out a warning strike to encourage Syrian authorities to protect the country's Druze community.
Meanwhile, clashes erupted on the outskirts of Damascus between armed groups affiliated with Sunni Islamist groups and Druze fighters.
Against this backdrop, Pedeshen called for immediate measures to protect civilians, restore order and prevent the intensification of intercommunal tensions. He stressed the need to hold those responsible for the violence and killings of civilians accountable and called for "full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria."
