US President Donald Trump discussed a possible delay in the introduction of tariffs with the heads of car companies General Motors, Ford and Stellantis, Reuters reported, citing sources.
According to him, the conference call was attended by General Motors Chief Executive Mary Barra, Ford Chief Executive Jim Farley, Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford and Stellantis Chairman John Elkann. The automakers urged Trump to lift tariffs on vehicles from Mexico and Canada that meet the rules of origin established by the 2020 United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Trump and the company executives also discussed a possible 30-day delay in the imposition of the tariffs.
Automakers have proposed increasing investment in the U.S. auto industry but want certainty about tariff and environmental policies, the agency notes.
