On this day in 1897, a Law was promulgated in our country for the mandatory wearing of locally produced clothes and shoes by civil servants.
This is a time of enthusiasm and upsurge and the governments of Bulgaria take various measures to ensure the protection and development of the economy and entrepreneurship in our country, recalls "With Bulgaria in the Heart".
Protectionism is leading in Bulgarian economic policy and under all governments of this period. The aim of this Law on the Mandatory Wearing of Locally Made Clothes and Footwear by State Officials was to support the production and trade of Bulgarian clothes and footwear.
Penalties were also provided for officials for failure to comply with the law, with a fine of 10 to 60 leva. A sanction of 100 to 1,000 leva and imprisonment of one to six months awaited any manufacturer or merchant who sold imported materials for clothing and footwear instead of Bulgarian-made ones.
When the Law on the Mandatory Wearing of Locally Made Clothes and Footwear was adopted in 1897, a government headed by Konstantin Stoilov was in power (May 19, 1894 - January 13, 1899).
