The Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU prepared the decision for the full acceptance of Bulgaria and Romania in Schengen. In the draft of the document available to BNT, it is written that from January 1, 2025 checks on the internal land borders with and between Bulgaria and Romania are abolished.
The fact is also recalled that on March 31, 2024, as a first step towards the acceptance of the two countries into Schengen, internal air and sea border checks with and between the two countries were abolished. The document will be discussed tomorrow at a meeting of the ambassadors of the EU countries and finally voted on at the meeting of the EU interior ministers on December 12 in Brussels.
According to sources from the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU, no additional comments are expected from the member states, i.e. the decision will be adopted. The Netherlands has also confirmed that it has no objections, but before the vote on December 12 it needs formal consent from the country's national parliament.
Today in the EP there is a debate on the subject. It is expected that the MEPs will once again call for the speedy full acceptance of both countries in the Schengen area and the elimination of discrimination against the citizens of both countries.
