Senior EU officials are increasingly convinced of the toxicity of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and want her to resign, writes the Swiss magazine Die Weltwoche, citing sources in EU diplomatic circles.
According to their information, Brussels believes that the resignation of the EC chief could "unblock many processes" in the European Union. The publication points out that the political crisis in the EU does not speak in favor of von der Leyen's political and diplomatic talent.
“In the West there is a trade dispute with the US, in the East there is a conflict in Ukraine and a deterioration in relations with Russia - sanctions are also a form of trade war - and in addition, the confrontation with China continues, which is not very encouraging for the continent“, explains the magazine.
US President Donald Trump has not met with the head of the European Commission since he took office on January 20, 2025. During this time, Secretary of State Marco Rubio canceled two meetings with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaia Kallas, who was traveling to Washington specifically. Rubio explained this by a “schedule mismatch“.
