Dimitar Stavrev: The drone above Sofia Airport may have taken off from a catapult - 1

Transport Minister Grozdan Karadjov is calling a new meeting after the emergency situation at Sofia Airport on Friday evening, when several aircraft were prevented from landing due to an unidentified drone. The aircraft was much larger than usual and a possible collision with an aircraft could have led to a serious scenario.

„Such a drone is very dangerous for landing and taking off aircraft, as it can lead to a crash with many victims. It is usually used to take photos and videos from the air. In the military sphere, it can carry explosives, bombs and sow death. In my opinion, it's not a provocation, but someone was having fun," commented in the studio of "Hello, Bulgaria," aviation journalist from "Krile" magazine Dimitar Stavrev.

According to him, there are no systems in civil aviation in the country that can detect the signals of such drones. "According to the dimensions of the drone, which the Minister of Transport indicated, such an aircraft could hardly be launched manually. It more likely took off from some kind of catapult," he believes.

According to him, since the start of the war, drone technology has evolved significantly. “When using fiber optic drones, there is no radio signal and the only way to combat such drones is when one hits another drone,” Stavrev also pointed out.

”Detection of drones is very difficult, especially if they are small. The gap between the current capabilities of drones and the current technology for eliminating such drones must be quickly bridged,” the aviation journalist added.
