Iskra Mihaylova called for the cancellation of the sale of equipment for the "Belene" NPP at a briefing in the National Assembly. According to the MP, this is another proposal by Vazrazhdane in this direction and they continue to insist that the available equipment be used to build new nuclear capacities in Bulgaria.
„Belene NPP“ is one of the most advanced projects in Europe and we have the opportunity to be among the first countries to resume and expand their nuclear capacities“, said Iskra Mihaylova.
She emphasized that in the current international situation, nuclear energy is considered a key element in Europe's energy security.
„We see a change in the international situation. There is increasing talk of peace and the resumption of economic relations with Russia and other countries that can be good partners for Bulgaria. If Ukraine can build nuclear capacities with Russian equipment and specialists, why shouldn't Bulgaria do it?“, asked the MP.
According to her, time is running out, as the deadline for negotiations on the sale of the equipment ends very soon. „We must cancel this decision and keep our equipment to expand our own nuclear capacities. This is the economically sensible solution“, she added.
Iskra Mihaylova expressed her expectation of support from her colleagues in the plenary hall, especially from the parliamentary group of “BSP – United Left“, who verbally express support for the construction of the “Belene“ NPP and now they must show whether this is real or just pre-election words.
“If “Vazrazhdane“ ruled the country, we would have already started the resumption of the project. This is in our national interest. We expect other parties to show common sense and stop this process of selling off strategic assets for symbolic amounts“, Mihaylova also stated.
She drew attention to the low price at which negotiations for the sale of the equipment are being conducted. “The price is the purchase price of these reactors – 1.176 billion leva. This is practically a gift from the Bulgarian state. We cannot afford such a decision, at least for economic reasons“, commented the MP.
