The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria expresses its deep disappointment and categorically condemns the recent statements of the Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia, Mr. Hristijan Mickoski. These statements not only distort reality, but also undermine efforts to build good neighborly relations and European integration, says the ministry's position, sent to the media.
Earlier today, from the rostrum of the RSM Assembly, Prime Minister Hristiyan Mickoski stated that the real question is why about 700-800 Bulgarians in RSM, who declare that their mother tongue is Bulgarian, should be included in the constitution and why there is no such requirement for Albania, BNT recalls.
Here is the full position of our Foreign Ministry, quoted by Nova TV:
We would like to emphasize that the issue of the rights of Bulgarians in the Republic of North Macedonia is not a bilateral dispute between our two countries, but is an issue that affects fundamental European values and standards. Progress in the process of European integration of RSM is possible only through the full and complete implementation of the European Consensus, agreed and adopted by the Council of the EU in 2022, an important part of which are the amendments to the Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia. Respect for the rights of minorities and ensuring their equality are fundamental principles of the European Union. In this context, the Republic of North Macedonia, as a candidate country for EU membership, bears the responsibility to bring its legislation and practice into line with these principles.
We would also like to draw attention to the fact that a huge number of citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia have acquired Bulgarian citizenship, recognizing their Bulgarian origin and identity.
We call on the authorities of the Republic of North Macedonia to refrain from rhetoric that incites division and hatred, and instead to focus on fulfilling the criteria for membership in the European Union, including the protection of the rights of all ethnic communities in the country. Only through sincere dialogue and mutual respect can we achieve sustainable development and prosperity for our peoples within a united Europe.
