A third desulfurization installation will be built by Bobov Dol TPP. The Eco-Inspection in Sofia came out with a positive decision that the new installation will not have a negative impact on the environment in the area. Until now, the plant, with a capacity of three units of 630 megawatts, operated with two desulfurization installations.

The new installation will be for flue gas cleaning and will be connected to Energy Boiler 1. This will increase the efficiency of the purification facility, mainly for flue gases. The documentation states that the operation of desulfurization plants provides an average degree of purification of flue gases from sulfur oxides of over 97 percent.
The chimneys of the three desulfurization plants are 80 meters high. The main chimney is 205 meters high. The plant uses mainly coal for fuel, but also biomass - straw.
Waste has not been burned for three years. The probability of accidents at three desulfurization plants will also be reduced. The investment intention will lead to a change in the volume of water consumed for production needs.
The planned change is for about 1,298,000 cubic meters per year. The Bobov Dol TPP uses water from the Dzherman River and the Dyakovo Dam according to an approved schedule. An expert commented on the effect of building a third desulfurization plant: "It captures the sulfur from sulfur dioxide so that it doesn't go into the air. Sulfur dioxide causes acid rain. In fact, the sulfur doesn't go into the air. What comes out of the two low pipes of the thermal power plant is steam, water vapor. The sulfur is caught and falls down like gypsum".
