A month before Easter, there is still not enough clarity about the price of lamb meat, which we traditionally put on the festive table. According to sheep farmers, it should be like last year's, but speculation is also high, bTV reported.
If a kilogram of live weight from farms costs 10-12 leva, in stores it should be offered for 20 leva at most, but this is unlikely to be the case and the end consumer will only feel the differences in his pocket.
The fears are that imported lamb meat from Romania will flood the market, which, however, will not be of better quality than domestic production.
One of the recommendations is to buy directly from sheep farms. There are not many such legitimate establishments left in the Vratsa region.
In the Vratsa village of Rogozen, Ivaylo Lyubenov has had a farm with sheep and lambs for 13 years.
“We have looked after them without subsidies and will look after them again. It is not so much about the money, but about the desire“, he says.
Ivaylo looks after 320 sheep, and with the little ones there are over 600.
His father Boyko Lyubenov says that the difficulty in this profession is the lack of serious workers. That is why only the two of them look after the animals. A woman helps them with milking.
Ivaylo assumes that the price of lamb this year will be like last year - 10-12 leva live weight. However, no one is saying yet. He commented that the price in the store is double, even almost triple.
"The biggest profit goes to the stores. This can be regulated, but it depends on the government," said Ivaylo.
The two are worried about the import of lamb from Romania and thus undercutting the price on the domestic market.
