First of all, May Day is a day loaded with a lot of history and a day that symbolizes an intransigence that led to a suffered change. This was said by Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the National Council of the Bulgarian Socialist Party Atanas Zafirov, who attended a traditional celebration of International Labor Day organized by the left - May 1.
„Since that May 1, 1886 in Chicago, to this day, people have been asking themselves whether it is worth it in the name of accumulating wealth to witness human exploitation, the exploitation of workers' labor“, said Zafirov.
„This is a date that reminds us of the trade union movements, the strikes, and the brutal working conditions. Old Europe was spared from these processes, thanks to the strong trade union movement and the social democratic parties, but even today we are witnessing a different type of exploitation. A different type of modern labor slavery“, he said.
“On a day like today, we must say clearly, loudly and strongly to the people: “We are with you“, added Atanas Zafirov.
According to him, we are witnessing a transformation in the economy, in which “the worker is transformed from an expense into an investment“. “But such an investment requires good education, good social status, and good health status. That is how we see our role – to be the guarantor of this transformation“, he said.
This year, representatives of the left-wing coalition in the executive, legislative and local authorities, in the European Parliament, representatives of the unions, together with members and supporters of the parties in the coalition, as well as workers, gathered under the slogan “For social justice in a solidary Bulgaria!“, to celebrate the holiday.
The event will focus, in addition to the rights of workers, their protection and decent pay, on the problems of integrating people with disabilities into the labor market. For this purpose, a number of organizations and representatives of people with various disabilities have been invited to share the difficulties they face and to seek solutions together. Part of the celebration of Labor Day is also the celebration of the Left Press Holiday.
