Albania plans to build a fourth international airport, which will be located in the south of the country. It will operate seasonally to relieve the overcrowded airport on the Greek island of Corfu and serve tourists heading to the Ionian Sea and southern Albania. The news was announced by Prime Minister Edi Rama at a tourism fair in Berlin.
Rama stressed that Tirana airport, which is already showing record growth in passenger traffic in Europe, is overloaded. In 2024, it served 11 million passengers, a significant figure for a country with a population of only 2.5 million. The new airport in the southern part of the country will be an important step for the further development of tourism, especially given the construction of new resorts and luxury hotels in the region.
In addition, the authorities are considering the possibility of creating another small airport in northern Albania, which will improve transport accessibility and stimulate the development of tourism in this part of the country.
Rama also noted that in recent years, many international airlines have entered Albania and the geography of air routes continues to expand. Negotiations are underway with the US aviation authorities to launch direct flights to North America, and Qatar Airways is also expected to enter the Albanian market. Albania already has air connections with the UAE and Saudi Arabia, but new routes are planned to be opened in the future.
Tirana Airport, which operates 24 hours a day and is equipped with a modern digital passport control system, has become one of the most accessible and convenient in the region. This attracts not only tourists, but also residents of neighboring countries who prefer to fly from Tirana.
The construction of a new international airport in the Albanian resort town of Vlora is already in full swing. The Albanian Prime Minister previously stated that the first plane will land there in the summer of 2025.
Thus, the Albanian government is actively developing aviation infrastructure to meet the growing demand for air travel and strengthen the country's position as a popular tourist destination.
