Former Shabbat (Israeli Prisons Administration) officer Shalom Nagar, who carried out the death sentence against Nazi Adolf Eichmann, has died at the age of 83, Israel's Channel Seven reports.
„Nagar served as a prison warden and was chosen to hang the Nazi criminal and “architect of the Holocaust” Adolf Eichmann. This is the first and only official death penalty in the history of Israel”, the publication writes.
Shalom Nagar was forbidden for many years to reveal that he was Eichmann's executioner. In the first year after his execution, he had trouble sleeping.
„I dreamed for a whole year that Eichmann was chasing me, and then it was as if nothing had happened, only me and my wife knew that I had hanged Eichmann,”, Nagar said.
Obersturmbannführer Adolf Eichmann is responsible for “the final solution of the Jewish question” in Hitler's empire. After visiting Auschwitz in 1941. he authorized the sending of Jews to the death camps. In August 1944 Eichmann presents Himmler with a report on the extermination of four million people. After Germany's defeat, he poses as an SS lieutenant fighting on the Eastern Front and escapes to Italy.
While waiting for permission to emigrate from the Argentine authorities, Eichmann went overseas with a fake passport in the name of the refugee Ricardo Clement.
In Argentina, the Obersturmbannführer raised a family and worked at a Mercedes-Benz dealership. In 1958 however, Israel's Mossad intelligence service sniffs his trail. The operation to capture Eichmann was personally directed by Isser Harel, director of the intelligence service. Eichmann was captured on a street in Buenos Aires on May 11, 1960.
He was injected with a powerful tranquilizer and taken to Jerusalem on a plane of the Israeli airline El Al. The trial against the Nazi ended on December 15, 1961. with a death sentence. Adolf Eichmann was hanged on the night of May 31/June 1, 1962. in the prison of the city of Ramle.
