The Sudanese army has besieged Khartoum airport and nearby areas, two security officials told Reuters, BTA reported.

According to a Sudanese military source quoted by Agence France-Presse, the capital's airport has already been captured.

Sudan's armed forces on Friday seized the presidential palace in the center of the Sudanese capital, which was a significant victory in the two-year-long conflict between the regular army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, Reuters notes. The rebels have long held sway over the army, but it has recently regained control of territory in central Sudan.

Witnesses told Reuters that many SBP fighters were stationed in the southern areas of Khartoum, withdrawing across bridges to Omdurman.

The UN describes the situation in Sudan as the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Several areas in the country, with a population of about 50 million, are affected by famine and disease.
