What happened in Spain and Portugal once again highlights the stupidity of the energy strategies followed by too many countries in the European Union.
Georgi Vuldjev warned about this on "Facebook".
The collapse in the electricity grid is most likely the result of excessive reliance on solar power. The Spanish state electricity company warned that this created a risk of collapse two months ago. Yesterday it became clear that there was no information about the initial suspicions of a cyberattack.
This happened on Monday, a week after Spain "boasted" that for the first time in its history 100% of the electricity on a given day was generated by renewable energy. The boasting did not last long. Energy analysts both abroad and in our country (such as Boyan Rashev) have pointed out that a key problem with such a large share of RES in the system is the lack of inertia. Conventional and nuclear power plants generate such inertia, but solar panels and propellers by themselves do not.
In theory, this can be addressed with investments in batteries. But in practice, this increases the cost of solar (and wind) energy to a level that makes it more expensive than nuclear. When all side costs are taken into account and the fact that the life cycle of a solar/wind installation is more than twice as short as that of a nuclear installation is taken into account, the picture becomes extremely clear. In the long run, the cheapest "green" energy is nuclear.
The fight against "climate change" is a solved problem when it comes to electricity generation. We even have a large European country that has implemented the solution in practice. Its name is France. There, the share of "clean" electricity is 94%. This was achieved with a 67-68% share of nuclear power, 14% hydro, 10% wind (total), 4% solar. The rest is gas and biomass.
The question is why the other EU member states do not follow France's example, but continue to bang their heads against the wall? We see the result even in "solar" Spain, which not only does not plan to expand its nuclear power, but even intends to completely shut it down by 2035! There are no words that adequately qualify what a wonderful madness this is.
