Uncomfortable questions in Ankara: Will President Recep Erdogan really travel to the White House? - 1

Many questions arise in connection with the planned visit of the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to the United States in May, write the Turkish media.

In recent days some opposition media have even published claims that the visit planned for May 9 is being postponed.

V. “Hurriet“ this morning wrote in an extensive material that, according to political sources, the Turkish presidency and the administration of US President Joe Biden are still preparing for the visit.

According to the publication, the presidency did not order the suspension of the preparations for the visit. Neither the Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor other institutions have received such instructions, and work continues with the prospect of holding talks between Erdogan and Biden on May 9.

„Hurriet“ it also says that some political groups in the US are trying to get the visa revoked. According to them, after Erdogan's recent meeting with the political leader of "Hamas" Ismail Haniya, the Erdogan-Biden talks may have a negative effect on the electorate's support for the current US president.

There are also reports that the Israeli lobby in the US is also trying to prevent Erdogan from visiting the US.

There is no official announcement about the visit yet. The date of May 9 was announced by the village of “Huriet“ recently, as well as by Turkish and American officials speaking to Reuters on the condition of anonymity. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan had only said that Erdogan's trip to the US and a meeting with Biden were planned for early May.

CNN-Turk TV recalls that last week John Bass, US Deputy Secretary of State, was in Ankara and met with Turkish Foreign Minister Fidan. Among the purposes of the visit by Bass, who was the US ambassador to Turkey, was to prepare for Erdogan's visit to the US, according to CNN-Turk.
