In a video address to At the NATO Parliamentary Assembly held in Sofia, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Rustem Umerov shared Ukraine's aspiration for full NATO membership, BTA reports.
Umerov stressed that joining NATO is not just a strategic goal for Ukraine, but a move that promises to strengthen security throughout Europe and the world. “NATO symbolizes security and accepting Ukraine into its fold will benefit everyone by strengthening our collective security”, Umerov expressed.
Umerov shed light on the recent challenges facing Ukraine, highlighting in particular a new Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region.
Despite facing significant casualties, Russian forces equipped with tanks and infantry advance, only to be met by the resilient Ukrainian armed forces.
„Our situation is dire, with a critical shortage of weapons, including missiles and air defense systems,” Umerov revealed, pointing to Russia's relentless attempts to destroy what it cannot conquer and its continuous aggression against civilians.
The Defense Secretary made a moving appeal for increased support, stressing the urgent need for more anti-aircraft and long-range weapons to effectively counter aggression.
„Your determination can help us stop this brutality,” Umerov said, calling on NATO members for help in these difficult times. In his address, Umerov reaffirmed Ukraine's commitment to peace and security, viewing NATO membership as a key step towards achieving these goals.
