Hungary does not agree to Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte becoming the next NATO secretary general - 1

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó has made it clear that Hungary does not agree with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte becoming the next NATO Secretary General. Szijjártó recalled all of Rutte's harsh words in the past: “Hungary must be brought to its knees”. Such a position, according to Szijjarto, makes it difficult to see Rutte leading an organization where trust is paramount.

Rutte's controversial stance comes amid a standoff between Hungary and the European Union over the rule of law, particularly over a law in Hungary that has been criticized by many in the EU.

Amid the debate, Hungary is backing Romanian President Klaus Iohannis for NATO's leadership role, citing the current lack of Eastern European leaders in top NATO positions. Although Rutte is considered the favorite for the position with notable support from the US and the UK, opposition from Eastern European countries such as Bulgaria, Hungary, Turkey and Romania appears to be a significant obstacle. Even with the endorsement of US President Joe Biden, Rutte's path to leadership has not been smooth.
