The gesture of support is part of a broader US commitment to Moldova, which has received a total of $774 million in financial aid since the start of the Ukrainian conflict in February 2022. Of this, $300 million has been earmarked specifically for strengthening the country's energy infrastructure .
Blinken's trip, coinciding with a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Prague, underscores growing concerns about potential threats from Russia to Moldova and Georgia. The visit follows his surprise visit to Ukraine, aimed at reaffirming US support in the face of escalating Russian aggression.
There is growing concern about Russia's intentions in Moldova, especially with 1,500 Russian troops stationed in the separatist region of Transnistria.
