Part of a school building collapsed in Nigeria. The reasons are not specified, but residents recall that there have been heavy rains for the last 3 days.
More than 1000 children study in the school. A child survivor said that there were many children in one class and at the time of the collapse they were taking an exam. Another child says: “I walked into class and after no less than 5 minutes I heard a sound and the next thing I remember is the hospital.
Parents define what happened as “the scale of the tragedy is frightening”.
A resident of Chica said he saw many dead bodies and that dozens of people were rescued. “Everyone is helping to see if we can save more people," he said.
There have been several major building collapses in Nigeria in recent years, with observers blaming a mixture of poor construction quality, as well as the use of low-quality building materials and corruption.
In 2021, at least 45 people were killed when a high-rise building under construction collapsed in an affluent neighborhood of Lagos.
