Russia and China have officially confirmed renounced any territorial claims between the two countries. This was stated by the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, quoted by TASS.
She described the words of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te that "China should seize lands in the Far East from Russia" as marginal. According to her, only politicians obsessed with revanchism have such thoughts.
The Russian diplomat emphasized that the mutual rejection of territorial claims by Moscow and Beijing is enshrined in the Treaty of Good Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation of July 16, 2001. According to her, with this document, the two states have once and for all resolved the border issues. Zakharova added that in 2004 an additional agreement was signed for the eastern part of the Russian-Chinese border, and a little later the document was ratified.
The Russian MFA spokesman noted that this position is confirmed in a number of other joint documents that China and Russia have adopted at various levels, including at the highest level. Russia has consistently respected the principle of one China and views the Chinese government as the country's only legitimate government, Zakharova pointed out.
In her opinion, Lai Ching-te should pay more attention to the island's economic problems and demonstrate a constructive approach to the Chinese leadership's proposal for peaceful reunification with mainland China.
