Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro intends to withdraw the country from BRICS if he becomes president again, he said in an interview with the Folha de São Paulo newspaper.
Bolsonaro's words came shortly after US President Donald Trump and Argentine President Javier Tebas announced their countries' withdrawals from various international organizations and bodies.
He also said he would reach a "strong military agreement" with the US, aimed at combating terrorism on the triple border between Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina and would allow the deployment of a US military base in the region.
Bolsonaro will be forced to miss the 2026 presidential election due to the disqualification imposed on him by the electoral commission. According to various sociological surveys, the current head of state, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is considered the favorite in the fight against hypothetical supporters of his predecessor's course.
BRICS is an intergovernmental association created in 2006 by Russia, China, India and Brazil. In 2011, South Africa joined it, and on January 1, 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the UAE joined BRICS.
